Safety Reps Easy Guides To The Law - Fact Sheet 20: WorkgroupsNew workplace safety laws require the setting up of workgroups. The workgroups should be defined and set up with your union. In setting up a workgroup the following things have to be considered:
You and your union need to map your workplace to determine the right workgroups in your workplace. EXAMPLE - MAPPING YOUR WORKPLACEHOSPITALWORKGROUP 1 - XRAY DEPT 3 shifts x 40 Employees = 4 Reps (1 Rep for each shift plus 1 female rep) WORKGROUP 2 - KITCHEN 3 shifts x 100 employees (incl. 20 Portuguese)= 7 Reps (1 from each shift plus 1 Rep representing Portuguese workers) WORKGROUP 3 - LAUNDRY 20 Employees = 2 Reps WORKGROUP 4 - ADMINSTRATION 100 Employees = 3 Reps WORKGROUP 5 - OPERATING THEATRES N/A WORKGROUP 6 - CLEANING DEPARTMENT 15 Employees = 2 reps It is recommended that the ration of Reps to Employees is 1 to 10.
