Safety Reps Easy Guides To The Law - Fact Sheet 20: Workgroups

New workplace safety laws require the setting up of workgroups.

The workgroups should be defined and set up with your union.

In setting up a workgroup the following things have to be considered:

  • The number of employees

  • The type of work being performed

  • The hours of work - how many shifts are there?

  • The geographic location

  • The different types of work performed

  • Special needs i.e. gender, ethnicity, etc.

  • Pattern of work including seasonal or part time.

You and your union need to map your workplace to determine the right workgroups in your workplace.

EXAMPLE - MAPPING YOUR WORKPLACE

HOSPITAL

WORKGROUP 1 - XRAY DEPT

3 shifts x 40 Employees = 4 Reps (1 Rep for each shift plus 1 female rep)

WORKGROUP 2 - KITCHEN

3 shifts x 100 employees (incl. 20 Portuguese)= 7 Reps (1 from each shift plus 1 Rep representing Portuguese workers)

WORKGROUP 3 - LAUNDRY

20 Employees = 2 Reps

WORKGROUP 4 - ADMINSTRATION

100 Employees = 3 Reps

WORKGROUP 5 - OPERATING THEATRES

N/A

WORKGROUP 6 - CLEANING DEPARTMENT

15 Employees = 2 reps

It is recommended that the ration of Reps to Employees is 1 to 10.
