Investigations Reveal Crane Pains08 December 2005The CFMEU is investigating a growing epidemic of tower cranes that do not meet Australian standards. Union organiser Tony Papa said he inspected two sites on Wednesday, both of which were not up to scratch. One had a crane with the registration certificate out of date, had not had maintenance for three months. Another had safety information in another language. Papa believes its part of a growing trend of disregard for safety standards, fuelled by John Howard's workplace attacks. "What's happening now is just the start of what workers are up for under these laws," Papa said. CFMEU safety office Dick Whitehead estimated 80 per cent of cranes in Sydney did not meet Australian standards. "These standards concern access, egress, fall protection, manning levels, some aren't commissioned properly," Whitehead said. "It's been a miracle that no one has been injured recently." The Union's current blitz follows a safety alert from WorkCover warning action would be taken if cranes fail to meet standards. "The union has allocated resources to investigate possible breaches," Whitehead said. "Unsafe cranes pose a big risk to the public - as well as the people on the job." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
