Safety Champs Take Title09 November 2005UnionSafe award winners have scooped the pool at the WorkCover NSW Safe Work Awards. Wollongong fitter Mario Tuccia and Sydney police sergeant Luke Hannon shared the title of Workplace Safety Champion.Tuccia, who works at One Steel at Kembla Grange, has been active in coming up with tools to prevent injuries at work. One of the inventions the AMWU member is proudest of is the lying saw lifting jig which prevents back injuries to workers replacing the blade in a pipe cutter. Tuccia invented the jig after management called on people to come up with a solution to what was injuring dozens of workers a year. But he says he still hasn’t received any recognition from management. “They were a bit shy in the face when they saw me in the paper." Tuccia has seen safety programs implemented in schools and has been a member of the One Steel safety committee for more than 20 years. Meanwhile, Hannon picked up the title for his work coming up with a new police utility belt to make it easier to carry their 6.75kgs worth of equipment. Hannon said the better-fitting belts, made from lighter material, will allow police to return to the job. He said the old leather belts were leading to bad backs, bruises and lacerations. "You see a problem and you fix it," Hannon said. "If you create a job where people are happy to come to work they do a better job." Hannon was also recognised for other safety work including infection control procedures and improved health and safety supervision. Hannon won a UnionSafe award in 2003 and Tuccia took one home in 2004.
The NSW Safe Work Awards were presented by NSW Industrial Relations Minister John Della Bosca on October 28.
