Cyber Safety Now at Hand

13 October 2005

Finding out about health and safety at work has just become easier, with new laws taking effect which stop bosses snooping on their employees’ internet and email use.

Workers can now find out their rights at websites such as UnionSafe without fear of being monitored.

Communication between employees has also been aided with it becoming illegal for employers to block access to union emails.

If an employer wishes to monitor internet or email use they must provide two weeks notice and the details of how workers will be monitored.

Unions NSW secretary John Robertson said the days where bosses could spy on their staff and deny access to relevant union sites were over.

"This will not just be unfair and bloody-minded - it will also be illegal," Robertson said.

Meanwhile, the NSW Government is considering laying charges against Federal Government Department Centrelink for continuing to block access to union websites after the laws came into affect.

In the middle of a dispute with its workers, Centrelink claims the state laws have no jurisdiction over Federal Government departments.

A spokesman for NSW Attorney General Bob Debus disputed this and said the new laws were intended to cover every worker in the state.
