Safety the Focus

06 October 2005

A man who had an electrical board blow up in his face while working as an apprentice electrician will tell his story at the NSW WorkCover Safety Show in Sydney later this month.

Anton Guinea will talk about the impact of the injury, which left him with severe burns to the face, arms and hands.

"Looking back, the accident had physical, potential and mental impacts," Guinea said.

"My physical injuries healed, my family was thankful that I was alive, but I still had to face what had happened and return to work."

Guinea has developed a recovery program to assist accident victims and their families, which he will present at the conference.

The safety conference runs from October 26 to 28 at the Sydney Showground.

The conference has been organised by the Safety Institute of Australia and will hear from 100 local and international speakers, including trade unionists and academics.

There will also be displays of safety equipment and workshops.

ACT Safe in Canberra

The ACT has kicked off its occupational health and safety month.

During October there will be a range of events around Canberra focusing on OHS, including workshops and seminars, safety equipment displays, safety training and a trivia night.

There are 3,500 workplace injuries resulting in accepted workers compensation claims each year in the ACT private sector.

"Working together, sharing knowledge and finding solutions to health and safety risks, can make a difference and prevent workplace deaths, injuries and illnesses," ACT Industrial Relations Minister Katy Gallagher said.
