Warehouse Skates on Thin Ice

08 September 2005

A Western Sydney warehouse has been caught out dangerously modifying trolleys to boost productivity.

National Parts Warehouse, which is currently at the centre of a wage dispute, has allowed skateboard wheels and axels be attached to the front of trolleys to speed up activity.

NUW State secretary Derrick Belan said workers were expected to "ride" the trolleys at unsafe speeds.

"This is an obvious safety issue plus it demeans employees," Belan said.

"The trolleys are specifically designed for their task. One can only imagine what damage these modified trolleys could cause if they got out of control and hit someone."

The NUW is taking their concerns to Workcover.

" We view this as extremely serious and we expect National Parts to act responsibly and reverse any modifications to their warehouse equipment," Belan said.
