Looneys Threaten to Strike08 September 2005Daffy Duck is threatening to strike over pay and health and safety issues. The artists who play Daffy, Tweety Bird, Sylvester the Cat and other characters at Warner Brothers' Movie World on the Gold Coast believe their suits are causing health problems. "Some are reporting kidney problems after enduring prolonged periods working in the heat and humidity while wearing their character suits," the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance Queensland secretary David Waters said. The artists are also incensed by the theme park's latest pay offer, which they say is inadequate compared to other performers. More than 100 performers rejected a final offer of a 3.35 per cent rise in the first year, followed by a 3.25 per cent increase the following year. The performers branded the offer an insult, given their previous agreement provided for a 3.5 per cent rise. They also say they are aware of 4 per cent increases at other sites. The artists are planning to busk after shifts to help with the campaign, but will not rule out taking further action. "Strike action has not been ruled out. It's something that's been considered. Obviously we will be looking at a gradual campaign," Waters said. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
