Forklift Fatality Costs $300,000 in Fines

21 July 2005

Two companies and their management have been handed $297,000 worth of fines after a forklift driver was killed at a Sydney warehouse four years ago.

The driver was working alone when crates containing steel pipes fell on him at a Keralex warehouse in Chipping Norton.

Keralex and a subsidiary company, Top Container Transport, were prosecuted for failing to ensure a safe workplace, as were the companies' sole director and general manager.

Keralex was fined $135,000 and Top Container Transport was fined $140,000, while director of both companies, Francis Burn, was fined $17,500, and general manager Donald Steel was fined $5000.

WorkCover Acting Chief Executive Officer John Watson said the death was a tragic reminder of the necessity of controlling predictable risks.
