OHS Reps Make Workplaces Healthier

18 July 2005

Unions are good for workplace health and safety, a report from the UK has found.

The report looked at the chemical and construction industries because of the potential for hazards.

It found that on construction sites where trade unions were present, workers were more satisfied with health and safety procedures because of improved consultation and representation.

The report found a union representative was more effective in promoting health and safety because workers felt a union rep identified with their own interests in health and safety.

This highlighted the weakness and over-simplicity of managerial prescriptions for consultation.

The report concludes worker representation and consultation has a significant role to play in raising awareness of OHS among workers and management and reducing workplace accidents.
