New Electrical Code of Practice Flagged

27 August 2004

WorkCover NSW have announced a public consultation period for a revised Code of Practice for electrical work in the construction industry.

"WorkCover has reviewed the existing Code of Practice and is now seeking views on a revised draft that will provide guidance on electrical practices for employers and others who have responsibilities under the OHS Act 2000," says WorkCover CEO Jon Blackwell.

"The revised draft includes safety measures and procedures for temporary construction wiring, and the safe use, inspection and testing of electrical plant and equipment.

"Its aim is to ensure that risks to health and safety associated with electrical work on construction sites are identified, assessed and eliminated or controlled," Mr Blackwell said.

"The Code of Practice was first gazetted in 1992, and the revised draft will bring it into line with the latest OHS legislation and relevant Australian Standard," he said.

"Comments on the draft code can be made through a variety of channels during the public consultation period, which runs from 23 August to 18 October 2004, including WorkCover's website www.workcover.nsw.gov.au by fax on 02 9287 5476, or by mail to EPCW Code Project Officer, Plant Team, WorkCover NSW Locked Bag 2906 Lisarow NSW 2252," he said.

"Alternatively, interested parties may contact the union or professional association and request them to incorporate comments into their submission," said Mr Blackwell.
