Death Site Workers Strike

06 February 2004

Building workers have walked off the job at the site where 16-year-old Joel Exner was killed last year, claiming builder Australand has not introduced adequate safety measures.

The action comes amidst claims that roof safety harnesses were still not being used on Australand sites. Joel Exner fell to his death while not wearing a roof safety harness.

Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) organiser Brian Fitzpatrick said that if the situation did not improve, other Australand sites would be shut down.

"Management gave us a commitment that safety would become paramount but their attitude hasn't changed," Fitzpatrick was reported as telling news agency AAP. "We're not prepared to wait until someone is injured again. If they are not 100 per cent co-operative it'll go into a full-blown dispute.

"We want it iron clad, in writing, and fully carried out."
