Christmas Cash Crisis

19 December 2003

ATM’s across NSW could run out of hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash because of penny pinching by security companies in the lead up to Christmas.

Hundreds of workers employed by security companies Chubb and Armaguard turned up for work last week, advising their employers they were ready and willing to undertake all cash and valuables delivery and pick up work provided it was safe. Workers wanted assurances that everything possible was being done to minimise the health and safety risks of hold ups and armed robberies.

In response security companies Chubb and Armaguard decided not to provide large numbers of Transport Workers Union (TWU) members with work. Only a small number of trucks left Armaguard and Chubb depots with improved safety and security arrangements in place.

As a result of the actions by Chubb and Armaguard a number of cash supply deliveries will be disrupted.

The Transport Workers union has slammed the security companies moves as "provocative" and that it may add to anticipated disruptions to NSW's cash supply.

No Brinkmanship At Brinks

Work at NSW's other major cash in transit company Brinks, however, is continuing as normal. Work at Brinks is being conducted in line with improved industry safety and risk minimisation practices, and scheduled trucks have left Brink's depots with improved security arrangements in place.

Despite more than ten hold ups in the last five months and admissions from Armaguard's National Security Manager that "lawlessness" is rife on the streets of Sydney at the moment, both Chubb and Armaguard have decided not to implement members requests for improved safety and security arrangements.

TWU members at both Armaguard and Chubb continue to remain in close vicinity to their depots ready and willing to undertake all cash and valuable delivery and pick up work provided it can be performed safely.
