Compo Cmn: We’re Faster, Cheaper, Fairer11 March 2003The NSW Workers Compensation Commission has heard more than 8,000 applications in its first year of operation, resolving disputes faster and more effectively than the court system it replaces, according to its annual report. The report says fewer cases were filed than occurred in the old Compensation Court system and the average arbitration period was just 90 days. More than 50% of applications were to register an 6SSA Agreement - an agreement between an insurer and a worker for the payment of a lump sum compensation for permanent impairment. About 43% were to resolve a dispute and 2% were for interim payment directions. The report says that in the Commission's first year 41% of cases were settled, 27% were discontinued by the applicant or by agreement of the parties, 12% were closed by registration of an S66A Agreement, and 10% were determined by arbitrators. The Commission replaced the Compensation Court last year as a means of reducing costs and encouraging people to become directly involved in resolving their own disputes.
