WorkCover Blitz On Formwork04 February 2003WorkCover has commenced a blitz of formwork in the construction industry to help spread its message that employers must be active in identifying, assessing and controlling risks in the workplace. A recent case in which a construction worker at Burwood's Westfield Shopping Centre sustained a fractured pelvis and other injuries highlights the importance of the message, accordiing to WorkCover Acting General Manager Rod McInnes. The firm responsible for formwork at building construction sites was fined $130,000 over the incident by the NSW IRC in court session. The construction worker at Burwood's Westfield Shopping Centre stood on plywood formwork that was not supported causing him to fall about three metres onto concrete and the edge of the plywood. The IRC heard that the firm failed to ensure a safe system of work for employees involved in the removal of formwork at the shopping centre. Justice Kavanagh described the action as a most serious breach of the OHS Act.
