Delegates Bullying Fact Sheets - Bullying Factsheet 04 - What Workers Can Do

Workplace bullying is unacceptable behaviour and should not be tolerated. As a first step, there are a few tactics worth trying - but only if you feel up to it and if they are appropriate for your situation.

Steps to take(If you feel you can do it)

  • Ask for a meeting.
  • Choose a quiet confidential place.
  • Take notes of the discussion.
  • State aim of the meeting, for example "I'd like to discuss how we communicate with each other".
  • Try to stay calm.
  • Do not become personally abusive or insulting, i.e. remain completely professional.
  • If the other person becomes aggressive, thank them for their time and end the meeting.
  • Stand firm if you come under verbal attack.
  • Tell the bully you will not put up with being spoken to in that way.
  • If you don't feel up to this, contact your OHS Rep, Supervisor or union delegate.
  • Remain confident in your own judgement and ability.
  • You may need to avoid being alone with the bully.

Industrial/OHS

  • Talk to the union rep
  • Grievance Procedures
  • Dispute Settlement Procedures
  • Get support from your workmates
  • Raise issues with safety rep or committee
  • Request them to conduct a risk assessment
  • Request the OHS Rep maintain confidentiality

Anti Discrimination Laws

  • Get advice on process from your union
  • Lodge a claim

Steps to take (If you need support)

Contact your Union Delegate, OHS Representative or OHS Committee.

Personal Approaches

  • Talk to friends or people you trust
  • Maintain your outside interests (helps keep your sense of perspective)
  • Look after yourself and your close relationships
  • If you feel unwell, seek medical help

Workers Compensation

  • Get advice on process from your union
  • See a doctor
  • Lodge a claim
  • Consult a solicitor (your union can refer you to one)

Training

  • Communication skills
  • Conflict resolution
  • Stress management
  • Self confidence and self esteem/ assertiveness

Case Study Four: A teacher

The head of the language department was in the habit of telling teachers off in front of their peers. She played favourites and made me rewrite plans that were good quality. I told her I did not like to be spoken to like a child in front of others. She ignored me and I eventually complained to the principal, who took action. We noticed a change in her behaviour for the better.
